How the Islamic date works in Saudi Arabia
Today is day 26 of Rabi' al-Akhir, a month of 30 days this year, so 4 days remain after today and Jumada al-Ula begins on Monday, 12 October 2026.
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar has twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days, so its year is 354 or 355 days long, about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. That is why Ramadan and the Eids move earlier each year.
Saudi Arabia keeps its official dates on the Umm al-Qura calendar, which fixes each month's length in advance. Three months are different in practice: the start of Ramadan, Shawwal (Eid al-Fitr) and Dhu al-Hijjah (Hajj and Eid al-Adha) is announced after the crescent is sought on the evening of the 29th, so it can differ from the calendar by a day.
Method and source
Dates come from the Umm al-Qura calendar table, tested automatically against the official table for every month of 1440–1450 AH. The page follows Riyadh time and is rebuilt every night after midnight. Sunset and the moon are computed astronomically for Riyadh. How we calculate dates.
Common questions
What is the Islamic date today?
Today is Wednesday, 26 Rabi' al-Akhir 1448 AH in Saudi Arabia, which is 7 October 2026 in the Gregorian calendar. Saudi Arabia uses the Umm al-Qura calendar for official dates.
How do I write today’s Hijri date in numbers?
1448/04/26, year first, as Saudi government forms usually ask for it. Day first, it is 26/04/1448.
Which calendar does Saudi Arabia use?
The Umm al-Qura calendar, a lunar Hijri calendar with month lengths set in advance by astronomical calculation. Government dates follow it, while the start of Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijjah is announced after the new crescent is sought.
Why is the Islamic date different in other countries?
Some countries start each month when the crescent is actually seen, others use their own calculation. A month can therefore begin a day earlier or later than in Saudi Arabia, most noticeably for Ramadan and the two Eids.
When does the Islamic day begin?
In religious terms at sunset, so the night comes before its day: tonight in Riyadh the sun sets at 5:34 pm, when the night of 27 Rabi' al-Akhir begins. On calendars and official documents the date changes at midnight, together with the Gregorian date.
When does Jumada al-Ula start?
Jumada al-Ula begins on Monday, 12 October 2026 on the Umm al-Qura calendar, after Rabi' al-Akhir, which has 30 days this year.
